SCHOOLS SURVIVING
COVID-19

An Overview of the Series

The purpose of our Schools Surviving COVID-19 series is quite simple: Use our expertise and experiences as superintendents to discuss five topics that we think will make a difference for school leaders, their staffs, and children during this pandemic.

The five topics include the following:

Supporting Your Staff discusses that while instruction will always be our focus, school leaders would be better served during this pandemic by also creating supportive conditions for their staff.

In Communicate!! we argue that school leaders be purposeful in using communication to manage this crisis: provide updates; relieve staff’s stress; highlight success stories; and clarify misinformation, to mention only a few.

Don’t Feel Left Out notes that at some point principals and their staffs may feel alone, isolated. Thisis to be expected. But principals play important roles in keeping their staff engaged, in strengthening morale, and in lessening feelings of isolation.

The Main Thing and Equity presses the imperative that now is the time for prioritizing improved instruction and student achievement, especially for poor and minority children.

Where Everyone Knows Your Name makes the argument that now more than ever children deserve and need warm, receptive, and caring schools. Imagine the very comforting feelings if everyone in your school knows your name?

We hope that you will enjoy the series. Please make comments, give suggestions, start conversations, talk about your needs and successes during this crisis, and help each other.
